What is third party car insurance?
Third Party car insurance is the basic or minimum level of cover that you are legally required to have in order to drive your car in the UK.
Tending to be the cheapest form of car insurance cover it is important to understand what is not covered when you opt for this type of policy.
- In the unfortunate event of you causing an accident, third party car insurance only covers you for the damage or injury caused to a third party.
- You cannot claim any money for personal injury to yourself, or damage to your vehicle.
- Third Party policy will also cover any property damage that is proven to be your fault in the event of an accident.
- If your car is stolen and the criminal causes an accident by reckless driving or otherwise you will be covered for the damage or injury caused to a third party, but your own vehicle is not covered.
- Personal injury claims are not possible.
- If your car or vehicle is stolen or set on fire you cannot claim any form of damages.
- If you are not the registered vehicle owner then are not allowed to drive that car on third party insurance
- In the event of an accident you are protected against any claims made against you
Whilst there are advantages in a third party policy such as lower cost and a cover for needs only criteria, the best advice is to read each insurance company’s terms and conditions as they do vary substantially. Often you do get for what you pay for but there are some terrific deals to be had, especially online where insurance companies have lower costs and quotes can be processed within seconds.
